Iconic American rock band Green Day delivered a spectacular show to close out The Isle of Wight Festival 2024. The band thrilled fans with classic hits from their seminal albums Dookie and American Idiot. Highlights of their set included energetic renditions of ‘Basket Case’, ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’, ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, and ‘American Idiot’. In a memorable moment, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong invited young fan Molly on stage to sing ‘Know Your Enemy’ with the band.
Billie Joe praised the audience for their enthusiastic participation, exclaiming, “England knows how to do this s***, that’s for sure. I’m going home and telling everyone ‘you better get your s*** together’.”
The festival kicked off Sunday morning with a performance by local talent Marnie Marie, who opened the Main Stage after winning this year’s Wight Noize competition. Beverly Knight followed, bringing funk and American soul tunes that got the crowd into a festive mood. McFly delivered a hit-packed set with fan favorites like ‘Obviously’, ‘Star Girl’, and ‘It’s All About You’. Zara Larsson’s feel-good pop anthems ‘Lush Life’ and ‘Symphony’ perfectly suited the late afternoon vibe.
English rockers Nothing But Thieves electrified the audience with songs such as ‘Something On My Mind’ and ‘Overcome’. Just before Green Day, Scottish rock band Simple Minds delighted fans with timeless tracks like ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ and ‘Someone Somewhere in Summertime’.
Over at the Big Top stage, Jo Whiley headlined with her 90’s Anthems set, which was a hit with the crowd, featuring classic 90s dance tracks. Other acts on the Big Top stage included Cian Ducrot, Caity Baser, Noahfinnce, and Toyah & Robert.
The River Stage saw a massive turnout for Channel 4’s SuperVet, Noel Fitzpatrick, performing with his band Fitz & The Fearless Dogs. Encouraged by Brian May to learn guitar, Noel made his Isle of Wight Festival debut with this set, his second gig ever. He brought rock’n’roll energy to the stage, playing the same guitar featured in the Foo Fighters’ ‘Monkey Wrench’ music video.
The four-day festival welcomed 55,000 attendees to Seaclose Park and featured performances from notable acts such as The Prodigy, Pet Shop Boys, Suede, The Streets, and The Pretenders, among others.
