In a groundbreaking collaboration, Cirque du Soleil has teamed up with Universal Music Group Nashville to launch “Songblazers,” a country music-themed production. The show made its debut on Wednesday, July 10, at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, marking Cirque du Soleil’s first foray into the genre of country music.
Directed by Amy Tinkham, known for her work with musical icons such as James Taylor, Aerosmith, and Sir Paul McCartney, “Songblazers” blends the rich history of country music with Cirque du Soleil’s signature acrobatics. Tinkham described the project as a significant challenge. “To be asked to make a show about country music is a very daunting task because it’s giant,” she said. “The approach I took was to dive deeply into the history and crafting of a song, which is really key to country music. Telling the truth and telling the story is the beautiful part of country music, so that’s what Songblazers is about.”
The production presents a musical timeline, showcasing 35 songs spanning from 1867 to the present. It features classic and contemporary hits, including Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places,” and Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
The world premiere drew a star-studded audience, with notable attendees such as Sam Williams, Carlene Carter, BOWEN & YOUNG, Ty Herndon, and Rob Mayes. Following its Nashville debut, additional performances are scheduled for the city, while fans worldwide will await their opportunity to experience the show.
Cindy Mabe, Chair and CEO of UMG Nashville, praised the production, stating, “This production is a love letter to country music, highlighting its enduring impact through the ages. It’s about celebrating our heritage while embracing the future.”
