Madonna, the iconic Queen of Pop, has taken an unexpected role behind the scenes of the upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” advising star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy on a pivotal scene featuring her 1989 hit “Like a Prayer.”
Reynolds and Levy approached Madonna for permission to use the song, which had never been licensed before for such use. What began as a request turned into a collaborative effort when Madonna, known for her directorial ventures in films like “W.E.” and “Filth and Wisdom,” provided insightful feedback on the scene.
“Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed,” Reynolds revealed on SiriusXM. “So it was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it… We went over and met with her and showed her how it was being used and where and why.”
To their surprise, Madonna not only approved but offered a significant creative note that enhanced the sequence. “She gave a great note,” Reynolds emphasized. “My God, she watched it and, I’m not kidding, she was like, ‘You need to do this, this, and this in this moment.’ And damn it, if she wasn’t like spot-on and right.”
Levy echoed Reynolds’ sentiments, noting, “We literally went into a new recording session within 48 hours to do this one note. She had only one note, and it was a great note, and it made the sequence better.”
In an interesting twist, Levy mentioned that a connection through one of Madonna’s sons, a fan of Deadpool, played a role in facilitating their collaboration with the music icon.
“Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is set to hit cinemas on July 25th, promising fans an electrifying blend of action and creative input from one of music’s most influential figures.
