The cause of death for Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, who passed away on July 26, 2023, has been officially confirmed one year after her death. According to her death certificate, the 56-year-old star died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, exacerbated by a lower-grade respiratory tract infection.

Sinéad O’Connor was found unresponsive in her London home last year, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow musicians alike. Her funeral, held in Bray, saw tributes from notable figures including Bob Geldof and Bono, reflecting on her impactful career and personal struggles.

Bob Geldof, a close friend of O’Connor’s, shared poignant memories of their friendship during the Cavan Calling Festival in Ireland, recounting their final exchanges. “She was a very good friend of mine,” he recalled. “Some of the texts (she sent) were laden with desperation and despair and sorrow and some were ecstatically happy. She was like that.”

Throughout her life, Sinéad O’Connor spoke openly about her battles with mental health issues, revealing she had attempted suicide multiple times. Her personal struggles were compounded by the tragic loss of her 17-year-old son Shane to suicide the year prior to her death.

In a heartfelt social media post following Shane’s passing, O’Connor expressed her profound grief: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”

Sinéad O’Connor leaves behind three children: Jake, 37, Roisin, 29, and Yeshua, 18, mourning the loss of a beloved mother and iconic musician whose legacy continues to resonate deeply within the music industry and beyond.
