Kehlani, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter, has vehemently refuted claims made by her ex-partner Javaughn Young-White that she is involved in a cult. The allegations surfaced when Young-White filed for full custody of their daughter Adeya, citing concerns for the child’s safety.
In documents obtained by Billboard, Young-White alleged that while Kehlani is on tour, their daughter Adeya is in the care of members of what he described as a cult. He claimed that Adeya sleeps in the same bed and is bathed by random adult members of this group, sometimes being left alone with them in a bedroom. He further stated that his attempts to retrieve Adeya were met with physical restraint and threats.
Additionally, Young-White requested a psychological evaluation for Kehlani and asked to be added to Adeya’s birth certificate.
Responding to these allegations, Kehlani, who uses she/they pronouns, took to Instagram to denounce the claims as “incredibly hurtful, inaccurate, inappropriate, and simply untrue.” She emphasized that she has never placed her child in harm’s way or left her with individuals deemed unsafe.
“I also do not align with any of the allegations made against my former religious community that have been stated in the media,” Kehlani asserted.
The Grammy-nominated artist underscored her commitment to her daughter’s safety, stating, “I have always taken great care to ensure that my child remains protected and safe at all times.” She affirmed that motherhood has been her primary focus and will continue to be so.
“This is a legal, private, familial matter that will be handled accordingly,” Kehlani concluded, announcing her intention to prioritize her personal well-being and that of her child.
Kehlani and Javaughn Young-White welcomed Adeya in March 2019 after a year of dating, subsequently parting ways a few months later.
