Hayden Baker, the emerging country artist from Katy, Texas, is making waves with his introspective new album, Barely Gettin’ By, featuring a notable collaboration with Grammy-winning star Brad Paisley. The album, which blends modern and traditional country styles with Baker’s signature guitar prowess, showcases Baker’s growth from a young fan to a rising star.
Baker’s journey began at age three when his father, a security worker at the Houston Rodeo, gifted him an acoustic guitar signed by Brooks & Dunn with the inscription “Hayden, practice!” Two decades later, Baker’s dedication paid off as he signed a publishing deal with Dunn’s company, Perfect Pitch, and recorded a cover of the duo’s “South of Santa Fe” for his new album.
The album Barely Gettin’ By features a standout track, “Don’t Meet Your Heroes,” where Baker and Paisley engage in a dynamic guitar duel reminiscent of Buck Owens and Roy Clark. Baker’s raw, heartfelt vocals and impressive guitar solos are complemented by Paisley’s distinctive style, blending electric and acoustic influences.
Baker’s guitar skills developed quickly after he picked up the instrument at age 15. Influenced by guitar legends such as Vince Gill, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Eddie Van Halen, Baker’s passion for guitar playing led to a pivotal moment when he saw Paisley perform live at the Houston Rodeo. Inspired, Baker spent five years mastering Paisley’s techniques.
Now, at 26, Baker is nominated for Guitarist of the Year at the Texas Country Music Association Awards. His dedication to his craft reflects his commitment to inspiring others. “I take my recording sessions very seriously,” Baker says. “Because I know some kid out there may hear it, and it might spark something in them. So I might as well give them the best that I’ve got.”
Baker is currently on tour supporting Barely Gettin’ By, with upcoming shows across Texas, including a solo acoustic performance at The Dosey Doe in The Woodlands on September 21.
