Emily Ann Roberts faced a significant setback earlier this year while on tour with Blake Shelton, grappling with a serious vocal issue that threatened her career. The 25-year-old singer received alarming news from her doctor, who warned that continued singing could lead to a six-month recovery period due to potential hemorrhaging.
“Basically, the doctor told me, ‘If you sing tonight, and you hemorrhage, you’re out for six months,'” Roberts recounted in a recent interview. “And I was like, ‘Well, that’s not an option.'”
Roberts, known for her appearance on “The Voice,” took immediate action to safeguard her career. As she resumes touring with Jamey Johnson, Roberts has adopted new strategies to protect her voice.
“I do my warmups and drink plenty of water, which helps significantly,” Roberts said. “And I’m trying to keep my mouth shut!” She added with a laugh, “People think singing wears out your voice, but talking is much harder on your vocal cords.”
Today, Roberts reports that she is “feeling totally back” to her usual self. “I’m doing everything I can to stay healthy and watch for warning signs,” she said. “I’ve learned a lot from this experience and am prepared to handle it better if it happens again.”
As Roberts looks ahead, she is actively working on new music, focusing on authentic and heartfelt songwriting. “I’m coming back to writing songs that I love and sharing things that are on my heart,” she explained. “It’s not about any grand motive—just sharing what’s coming out of me right now.”
Roberts has also celebrated the release of the deluxe edition of her debut album, Can’t Hide Country, which includes three new tracks, notably the poignant “When I’m Gone.” The song, co-written with Autumn McEntire, was inspired by a recent family funeral.
“I had just attended my father’s cousin’s funeral,” Roberts shared. “He passed away unexpectedly. Listening to his family speak about his life, I realized they didn’t mention his job, awards, or wealth. It struck me deeply and inspired the song.”
