MGK, the 34-year-old American rapper formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly and whose real name is Colson Baker, has shared his journey to sobriety and how a poignant comment from his daughter motivated him to seek help.
In a candid interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, MGK revealed that a heart-wrenching remark from his 15-year-old daughter Casie, whom he shares with ex Emma Cannon, was the catalyst for his decision to address his substance use. He recounted, “It started with my daughter saying, ‘Dad, you know I can tell when you’re high.’ It broke my heart. It was like the ultimate let-down.”
MGK admitted that it took him some time to seek professional help, acknowledging the powerful hold that addiction had on him. “Obviously, drugs have a vice grip on you,” he said.
Earlier this year, MGK earned praise and support from fans when he announced that he had been sober for a year. On the Dumb Blonde Podcast, he disclosed, “I’m completely sober from everything. I don’t drink anymore. I haven’t drank since last August.”
He further explained that he quietly entered rehab after completing his 2023 European Tour. “I didn’t tell anybody outside of the [people] closest to me. That was my first time ever going to rehab. They provided me with various techniques to manage my body and address where my anger was coming from, along with methods to control it.”
The musician expressed his desire to change his lifestyle for the benefit of his daughter and his fiancée, actress Megan Fox.
