Two of country music’s biggest stars, Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert, teamed up for a memorable performance on Saturday, August 24th, as they debuted their live duet of “What Am I Gonna Do.” The song, co-written by the pair, serves as the opening track on Stapleton’s critically acclaimed 2023 album Higher.
Lambert, who opened for Stapleton during his “All-American Road Show” stop at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, joined him onstage to deliver the poignant ballad, a song that resonates with those grappling with heartbreak. The lyrics—”What am I gonna do / When I get over you?”—capture the lingering pain of lost love, making it a go-to for listeners seeking solace in their sorrow.
Typically, Stapleton performs this emotionally charged number with his wife, Morgane. However, during this Houston show, Lambert stepped in to harmonize with Stapleton, blending their voices seamlessly in a performance that left the audience spellbound: “Been drinkin’ everything on that shelf / Feels like I’m killin’ myself / You’re gone, and it hurts like hell / Wishin’ I was anybody else.”
This isn’t the first time Lambert has stepped in for Morgane. In 2021, she filled in during the ACM Awards for a duet of “Maggie’s Song” when Morgane was unable to attend.
For those eager to catch more of Stapleton’s live performances, his “All-American Road Show” tour, which began in 2017, continues through March 2024, concluding in Auckland, New Zealand.
