George Jones’ Descent: Cocaine Addiction Amid Alcoholism Struggles

by Barbara

Country music icon George Jones struggled with a severe alcohol addiction that ultimately led him down a darker path. In March 1977, two years post-divorce from Tammy Wynette, Jones took the stage, aware of his inability to perform. A nearby doctor offered a controversial “solution” in the form of an injection, allowing him to complete a week of shows feeling revitalized. However, this quick fix only exacerbated his existing issues.

Tyler Mahan Coe, author of “Cocaine & Rhinestones: A History of George Jones and Tammy Wynette,” revealed that it was during this time that Jones first tried cocaine, administered by the same doctor who had provided the energy boost. This moment marked the beginning of a tumultuous struggle with addiction that would haunt the country legend for years to come.
