Spotify Highlights Surge in K-Pop Popularity with Significant Global Growth

by Patria

Spotify has spotlighted the remarkable growth of K-Pop music on its platform during its recent ‘K-Pop Talks’ event in South Korea. According to a report by The Korea Times, streams of K-Pop on Spotify have surged by 362% globally since 2018, with the U.S. alone seeing a notable 182% increase. However, the most dramatic growth occurred in Southeast Asia, where K-Pop streams on Spotify skyrocketed by 423% over the same period.

While the genre’s biggest stars have contributed to this growth, Spotify emphasized that newer artists are playing a major role as well. Four out of the five most-streamed K-Pop tracks in the first half of this year were from emerging groups, including Illit, Le Sserafim, and Babymonster. This aligns with an announcement made earlier this year, which revealed that Spotify’s flagship K-Pop playlist, ‘K-Pop ON! (온)’, had seen a staggering 5,600% increase in annual streams since 2015.

In addition, Spotify launched a campaign celebrating the eighth anniversary of Blackpink’s debut. The platform highlighted the group’s consistent growth, with streams rising 110% year-over-year, pushing their total streams to over 13 billion.

The continuous rise in K-Pop’s popularity on Spotify underscores the genre’s global appeal and its ability to capture audiences far beyond South Korea.
