Legendary New York hip-hop group 3rd Bass is bringing back their groundbreaking debut, The Cactus Album, with a special vinyl reissue set for release on November 8. The album will be available in various 2xLP formats, including an exclusive emerald green vinyl edition.
Released in 1989, The Cactus Album firmly established 3rd Bass—comprising MC Serch, Pete Nice, and DJ Richie Rich—as trailblazers in hip-hop. Known as one of the first interracial groups to gain major recognition in the genre, 3rd Bass helped pave the way for a more inclusive hip-hop culture. As AllMusic Guide noted, “It may not have completely integrated rap, but it was a precursor to a culture that became more inclusive and widespread after its arrival.” The album’s infectious energy and skillful lyricism made it a standout in the late ’80s.
Among the album’s highlights is the hit single “The Gas Face,” produced by Prince Paul, who was then known for his work with De La Soul and the Beastie Boys. The track also featured the debut of rapper Zev Love X, later known as MF Doom. With its sharp lyrical jabs at figures like MC Hammer and record label boss Lyor Cohen, “The Gas Face” is both a classic diss track and a vital piece of hip-hop history.
