UK-based noise rock band Schande has debuted their single “Gregor MacGregor” from their recently released LP, Once Around. The track showcases a powerful blend of driving guitars, pulsating bass lines, and relentless drumming, embodying the raw energy characteristic of the noise rock genre.
The single, characterized by Jen’s dynamic guitar work, is propelled forward by bassist Gio Villaraut’s compelling rhythms and drummer Ryan Grieve’s intense playing. Each moment of the song, which teases a brief pause, erupts into a robust wall of sound, heightening its visceral impact.
“The song connects to the way that we respond to each other’s experiences,” Jen explained. “It comes from a place of love, where we want to comfort one another and help each other find silver linings in tough situations. However, sometimes this approach can be more harmful than helpful if we don’t fully acknowledge what the other person is going through. I was inspired by a This American Life story called ‘Distant Replay,’ which discusses the dangers of trying to make others feel better without addressing uncomfortable realities, and that influenced the lyrics of ‘Gregor MacGregor.’”
Led by Jen Chochinov, a member of the Thurston Moore Guitar Ensemble, Schande’s debut album Once Around was released through The Daydream Library Series, the label founded by Thurston and Eva Moore under Ecstatic Peace Library. The album draws inspiration from the works of thinkers like Hannah Arendt and Adriana Cavarero, delving into themes of personal existence and subjectivity. Jen describes the record as “contemplations on how we disclose ourselves to one another, our responsibilities toward ourselves and others, and how we acknowledge each other’s experiences.”
