Longtime rock and blues musician Anthony Pierce will make his return to Tahlequah on October 20, performing at Emery’s Grill. Known for his versatility on guitar, bass, and various string instruments, Pierce has been entertaining audiences for decades with his unique blend of musical styles.
“I mostly play guitar, but I also play bass and other strings,” Pierce shared. Over the years, he has performed in numerous ensembles, including Cowboy Jones and A.H. Pierce and the Arrows.
Pierce’s musical journey began in Arkansas, where he played in bluegrass jams as a child. Since then, he’s toured Europe and played in cities across the U.S., including Memphis, Denver, Orlando, Austin, and Tulsa—where he’s been based for the past 29 years.
With Cowboy Jones, Pierce takes on the role of lead guitarist, delivering a “red dirt” sound—a genre rooted in Oklahoma that blends country and rock influences. “We play original works, and each member is involved in other bands, covering a wide range of genres,” he explained.
His other band, A.H. Pierce and the Arrows, brings an original, blues-infused rock sound, which he describes as the “Tulsa Sound.” This genre, emerging in the late 1950s and early ’60s, combines rock, blues, country, and “swamp pop”—a Creole fusion of blues and country music.
Influenced by legends such as Jimmy Karstein, Billy Gibbons, Doc Watson, J.J. Cale, and R.L. Burnside, Pierce has crafted a style that’s distinctly his own. He’ll take the stage at 4 p.m. on October 20, joined by Todd Harkreader, to share his eclectic music with local fans at Emery’s Grill.
