Megan Moroney has expressed her deep gratitude to fellow artist Kacey Musgraves for inspiring her songwriting journey. In a recent interview, Moroney revealed that Musgraves’ work, particularly her acclaimed 2013 album Same Trailer Different Park, played a pivotal role in her desire to write songs. She described Musgraves’ craft as “the reason I wanted to write songs.”

“Anything with Kacey next to it freaks me out, because she’s the reason I wanted to write songs,” Moroney said, celebrating her own album, Am I Okay?, which has become the third most popular female country album this year, following Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter and Musgraves’ Deeper Well. “She’s such a smart writer, and I fell in love with it.”

Moroney’s songwriting blossomed during a challenging time when she was temporarily wheelchair-bound due to an injury, which allowed her ample opportunity to practice guitar. Her journey has taken her from performing for her college sorority sisters to gracing some of the biggest stages in country music. With her unique “Emo Cowgirl Country” style, she has carved out her own niche in the genre.

Her songwriting often revolves around the theme of “having horrible taste in men,” allowing her to connect with a wide audience as she tours in support of her sophomore album, Am I Okay?, which she wrote in just two days. “It’s all over the board of being a human in your twenties,” she noted, highlighting the album’s diverse themes, including love, heartbreak, and friendship. “There’s something for everyone; there are love songs, hopeful songs, heartbreak songs, songs about my friends, and grief and loss.”

Despite the specificity of her lyrics, Moroney noted that fans have their own unique interpretations, which is precisely what she hopes to achieve with her writing. “I tell the stories, but then people make them their own,” she explained.
