Grammy-winning rap music star Lecrae Moore, renowned for his unique fusion of faith and hip-hop, recently returned to Denver, where he spent much of his childhood. During a visit for a speaking engagement at Sterling Correctional Facility, he shared insights about his life and career while getting a tattoo at Tengu Tattoo in Aurora.

As tattoo artist Carlos Stokes worked on his ink, Lecrae reminisced about growing up in Five Points, Denver’s historic Black neighborhood, once dubbed the “Harlem of the West.” He fondly recalled community festivals where his mother would buy pig feet sandwiches and his visits to McGill’s Barbershop.

Lecrae emphasized how his Colorado upbringing instilled resilience and a sense of identity, saying, “It was a community vibe—people thriving despite challenges.” His journey from battling in school hallways to winning two Grammys in 2024 illustrates the power of overcoming adversity.

Raised by a young, single mother amidst struggles with substance abuse in his family, Lecrae’s childhood was fraught with trauma. He navigated a turbulent environment, moving from Houston to San Diego and Dallas before finding his footing in Denver. Today, he uses his platform to amplify the voices of those often overlooked, demonstrating how faith and hip-hop can foster connection and meaning.
