After more than two decades, Arlington’s beloved indie-rock band Tsunami is back with a bang. On November 8, the band will release Loud Is As, a comprehensive five-LP collection featuring all their singles, a 1991 demo series, and remastered versions of three of their four albums. This marks a monumental return for the band, who also announced their first tour in over 20 years.

Formed in the early ’90s within the punk activist group Positive Force, Tsunami was founded by frontwomen Jenny Toomey and Kristin Thomson, who were roommates and co-founders of the Simple Machines record label. Tsunami’s signature sound, blending math rock, Riot Grrrl, and twee influences, set them apart in the DC indie-rock scene. They released four albums and toured the US and UK, sharing stages with iconic acts like Elliott Smith and Alice in Chains before disbanding in 1998.

While the group never officially broke up, their shows became sporadic until last year, when they signed to the Numero Group, a label specializing in music reissues. To celebrate their legacy and reissue Loud Is As, Tsunami will reunite with long-time collaborators Ida for a nationwide tour, kicking off in March 2025. The tour includes a hometown stop at DC’s Black Cat on March 27.

The collection is now available on Tsunami’s Bandcamp, with tickets to their DC show on their website.
