The Red Clay Strays have quickly become one of the most talked-about acts in Americana and rock music, thanks to their electric performances and rockabilly swagger. However, despite their high-energy guitar riffs and undeniable rock influence, the Alabama-based band often finds itself classified as country — a label that lead singer Brandon Coleman finds puzzling.
“I don’t think we’re country,” Coleman explained, echoing sentiments recently expressed by artist Zach Bryan. “I love country music. That’s what I was raised on. But if anything, we’re Americana. And it’s funny, because artists like Sturgill [Simpson] and Tyler Childers, who represent actual country, get lumped into Americana.” The band, whose debut studio album Made by These Moments was released in July, is nominated for Vocal Group of the Year at this year’s CMA Awards, standing alongside acts like Lady A, Little Big Town, Old Dominion, and Zac Brown Band.
