Cowboy hats and country spirit filled the Texas Trust CU Theater on Thursday night as Dwight Yoakam brought his Cosmic Roundup & Rodeo Tour to town, treating fans to a night of classic hits and fresh material from his new album, Brighter Days. The record marks Yoakam’s first collection of original songs since 2015, a highly anticipated return for the country legend.
The evening kicked off with an emotional performance by Dallas native Joshua Ray Walker, who opened the show with a set brimming with heart and resilience.
“We’re excited to play but equally excited to see the show,” Walker told the crowd, tuning his guitar between songs. The performance was especially poignant, as it marked Walker’s first full-band show in 11 months following a battle with cancer that temporarily sidelined his career.
Known for his soulful storytelling, Walker delivered a slightly subdued but powerful set, closing with “Burn It” from his 2019 album, Wish You Were Here. The audience responded with warm applause for the hometown hero, who is now gearing up for two additional dates with Yoakam this week in Beaumont and Corpus Christi.
Yoakam’s tour stop in Grand Prairie was a celebration of country music’s enduring charm, blending nostalgia with the excitement of his long-awaited new material. Fans left the theater already buzzing with anticipation for his upcoming shows in the Lone Star State.
