Baltimore’s angst-driven rockers Carbonstone are back with a powerful new single, “Echoes,” offering a gritty, visceral glimpse into a toxic, masochistic relationship. The track, which sets the tone for their forthcoming album The Absence of Self (due in 2025), explores the painful contradictions of love and suffering.
On “Echoes,” lead vocalist and songwriter Corey James opens with a raw confrontation, accusing a partner of deriving pleasure from his pain. “It’s like you love my suffering,” he declares, setting the stage for a turbulent emotional journey. By the chorus, the lines blur as James admits he can’t escape the cycle: “Bury me underground, I’ll lie with you / ‘Cause alone, I’m nothing.” The song unfolds as a haunting exploration of self-destructive tendencies, with James bluntly confessing, “I’m so self-destructive.”
This intense new release follows the band’s momentum ahead of their second album. Carbonstone’s The Absence of Self promises to be as dark and compelling as “Echoes.” The band will also be hitting the stage at Cult Classic Brewery in Stevensville, Maryland, on January 25, 2025, for a high-energy performance alongside The Oddeven and Silvertung. Carbonstone’s rising reputation is reflected in their recent nomination for Best Metal Band at the 2024 Maryland Music Awards, solidifying their place in the metal music scene. As they prepare for their full-length album, one thing is certain: Carbonstone’s best is yet to come.
