With the postponement of the Big Red Bash music festival until 2026, Birdsville’s outback tourism industry faced concerns over reduced visitors and profits. In response, event organizers have announced a smaller-scale gathering featuring Australian country music icon John Williamson.
Williamson will perform a one-night show next July atop the sand dunes of Queensland’s Simpson Desert. While the event will not match the Big Red Bash’s typical scale, festival founder Greg Donovan believes it will help boost tourism during the season, drawing an expected 1,000 attendees. This smaller event is expected to fill part of the gap left by the Big Red Bash, which normally attracts 8,000 to 12,000 people and generates significant accommodation bookings across the outback.
