Ed Sheeran is gearing up to make a grand return to the world of “big Pop” with a highly anticipated album set for release in 2025. The British singer-songwriter revealed that his new project marks a shift back to more upbeat, high-energy tracks after his more introspective releases, Subtract and Autumn Variations.
“It feels like I’m getting back into big Pop for the first time in a long time,” Sheeran said, expressing his excitement about the forthcoming music. Although he’s kept fans engaged with recent work, this next album will focus on the infectious pop melodies Sheeran is best known for.
The project, which is still untitled, is already complete, and Sheeran has already filmed two music videos for it, with plans to shoot two more early in 2025.
While fans eagerly await the new album, they can enjoy Sheeran’s latest musical offering: a collaboration with Love Actually writer Richard Curtis. The track, “Under the Tree,” was created for Curtis’ Christmas animation That Christmas, which is currently streaming on Netflix. Unlike the typical festive tunes Sheeran is known for, “Under the Tree” is a poignant, “sad Christmas song” that reflects Sheeran’s personal experience waiting for his father to return home for the holiday.
“This is quite a lot of people’s realities at Christmas,” Sheeran shared about the deeply emotional track, explaining it’s a song he always felt compelled to write.
Listen to “Under the Tree” and catch it in That Christmas, now streaming on Netflix.
