Snoop Dogg’s new album Missionary features a highly anticipated collaboration with Jelly Roll. The track, “Last Dance with Mary Jane,” pays tribute to Snoop’s enduring relationship with cannabis while creatively sampling Tom Petty’s iconic 1993 hit, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
On this joint effort, Snoop reflects on his lifelong affection for marijuana, while Jelly Roll, a recovering drug addict, offers a poignant twist. Jelly’s verses reframe the “Mary Jane” metaphor, portraying the titular “Mary Jane” not as weed but as a woman who left him heartbroken, singing, “Mary Jane is not a plant I smoke, but a woman who broke my heart.”
The duo debuted the song live during Jelly Roll’s Beautifully Broken Tour stop in Nashville on November 26, with Snoop making a surprise appearance, much to the delight of fans. The collaboration has since captured attention for its deep emotional resonance and seamless blending of their unique musical styles.
