Doechii’s long-awaited moment finally arrived when she sat down for an interview with the legendary Nardwuar, calling it a career highlight she’s been waiting for. “I’ve waited my whole career to talk to Nardwuar, and you can tell lol. I think I scared him y’all, so sorry,” she shared excitedly on social media after the interview aired.
The interview, which took place during this year’s Camp Flog Gnaw, showcased Nardwuar’s signature deep dive into his subject’s life, leaving Doechii visibly stunned. He surprised her with personal anecdotes, including her time performing in a church band while in Tampa and a nostalgic story about fishing with her grandfather—bringing up memories she hadn’t thought about in years.
Throughout the 23-minute exchange, Doechii was frequently left speechless, gasping in disbelief at how Nardwuar seemed to know intricate details about her life. True to form, Nardwuar also presented her with unforgettable gifts, including a 2021 issue of The Source featuring Trick Daddy and a vinyl copy of Grace Jones’ Slave to the Rhythm from 1985.
Reflecting on the impact of Grace Jones, Doechii said, “Grace is like one of the greatest artists of all time and she inspired a lot of my style. She’s literally my idol. I love her.”
In other exciting news, Doechii was recently honored as Variety’s Hitmakers Hip-Hop Disruptor of the Year. During her acceptance speech, she passionately expressed her love for hip-hop, saying, “I started making rap music when I was in high school, and from the beginning I felt a deep connection to the roots of hip-hop and the intellectuals who built this legacy.”
