Kendrick Lamar has been named the No. 1 pop star of 2024 by Billboard, topping the publication’s annual “Greatest Pop Star by Year” list. This prestigious recognition highlights Lamar’s dominance in the music world throughout the year.
The list, compiled by Billboard’s editorial staff, also features Sabrina Carpenter in the No. 2 spot and Taylor Swift at No. 3. Beyoncé landed at No. 8, while Drake was named an honorable mention. Shaboozey earned the title of Rookie of the Year.
What set Lamar apart in 2024, according to Billboard’s Andrew Unterberger, was his ability to push boundaries and deliver new, unprecedented moments in music. “Lamar proved that he could reach heights no rapper had seen in this decade, revitalizing the genre in a time when its mainstream influence had waned,” Unterberger wrote. “He created cultural moments with both profound impact and historical significance, showing he could dominate not only in rap but across the entire music landscape.”
Despite the accolade, Billboard’s recent 2024 Billboard Music Awards saw Drake recognized as the Top Rap Artist, narrowly edging out Lamar for the honor.
