Chad Morgan, one of Australia’s most beloved country music icons, has passed away at the age of 91 on New Year’s Day. The news was shared by his children, Chad Jr. and Janelle, via social media, though no additional details about his passing have been released. It is known, however, that Morgan had been battling ill health after an extraordinary career that spanned over seven decades.
Morgan’s journey in music began in 1952, when he was discovered on Australia’s Amateur Hour radio talent quest. His debut song, The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, not only propelled him to fame but also earned him the affectionate nickname that would stick with him throughout his career.
In 1958, Morgan released his debut album, The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, and went on to release an impressive 18 more albums, continuing to captivate audiences until the mid-1990s. His most recent work, the album Quarantined, was released in 2021, just before he announced his retirement in early 2024. His farewell performance took place at Twin Towns.
Chad Morgan’s legacy as a pioneer of Australian country music will be remembered for generations to come.
