The highly anticipated Áak’w Rock festival, billed as the largest Indigenous music event in the United States, has been canceled for 2025 due to staffing shortages, organizers announced.
In a statement posted on the festival’s website, officials confirmed that while the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council and The Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska remain committed to the festival, they have decided to push back the next full event to 2027.
“We are putting Áak’w Rock 2025 on hold,” the statement read. “Both organizations have agreed to refocus our efforts on the 2027 festival to ensure we create the best possible experience for our community and visitors.”
While the 2023 Áak’w Rock was a major success, showcasing Indigenous performers from around the world, festival leaders emphasized the importance of long-term sustainability. “We recognize that achieving long-term success requires time and resources,” said festival spokesperson Peterson.
In the meantime, organizers are exploring smaller events to keep the festival’s spirit alive, such as “Side Stage” performances and other gatherings celebrating Indigenous culture. However, these plans are contingent on securing adequate funding and staffing. “We appreciate the community’s continued support as we look forward to a grand return in 2027,” Peterson added.
