Irv Gotti, the influential co-founder of Murder Inc. Records and a key figure in shaping the careers of Ja Rule and Ashanti, has passed away at the age of 54. The music mogul died after suffering a stroke.
Gotti, born Domingo Lorenzo Jr., established Murder Inc. in 1998 alongside his brother Chris as an imprint under Def Jam Records. He had previously earned recognition for his role in bringing DMX to the label. Murder Inc.’s first major success came with Ja Rule’s 1999 debut album Venni Vetti Vecci, which included his breakout hit “Holla Holla,” marking the start of the label’s reign in the early 2000s hip-hop and R&B scene.
