Gene ‘Groove’ Allen, rap music star and actor known for his work with the 1980s hip-hop trio Groove B. Chill, has passed away at the age of 62. His death was confirmed by TMZ on Wednesday, February 12.
A native of Long Island, New York, Allen first gained attention as part of The Uptown Crew before forming Groove B. Chill with Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Belal “DJ Belal” Miller. The group released their only studio album, Starting From Zero, in 1990, which included tracks such as “Hip Hop Music.”
Earlier this year, Allen had been working on an EP, Bring Back the Party, and recently shared a video of himself rapping on Instagram, hinting at a 2025 release. The post has since been flooded with tributes to the late artist.
Allen is survived by his wife and three children.
