Ghost frontman Tobias Forge recently spoke with Chaoszine about the importance of drawing from a wide range of musical influences, especially for aspiring metal musicians.
Forge shared that many up-and-coming artists fail to make their mark because they focus too much on copying a single influence. “There are so many aspiring artists out there who never really become artists because they’re too focused on mimicking one single influence,” Forge said. “I never had that problem because I’ve always been equally influenced by both male and female singers.”
Forge also acknowledged that he doesn’t try to mimic legendary figures like Rob Halford or King Diamond. “I knew early on that I’m not Rob Halford, and I can’t sing like him. I’m not King Diamond either,” he explained. “But I can sing a Blondie song or sing along to Tori Amos just as easily as I can with someone like Jeff Becerra. Staying open to a variety of inspirations is the key. Sticking to just one influence probably won’t get you anywhere.”
Forge’s musical journey reflects his belief in diversity. His influences span across genres and eras. He has spoken about his strong connection to punk music, crediting bands like The Dickies and Bad Religion for shaping Ghost’s melodic approach. This punk influence is clear in Ghost’s sound, which blends heavy metal with melodic elements, setting them apart in the modern metal scene.
Forge’s vocal influences are equally diverse. In addition to Blondie and Tori Amos, he lists Siouxsie and the Banshees, Kim Wilde, and Tina Turner among those who have shaped his style. These varied inspirations have contributed to Forge’s unique vocal delivery, which combines metal’s powerful energy with fresh, unconventional techniques.
Ghost’s ability to blend genres has contributed to their broad popularity and critical acclaim. Their sound appeals to a wide audience while staying true to their metal roots.
