K-pop artist G-Dragon is partnering with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) to have his music broadcast into space. The 36-year-old rapper and singer-songwriter, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, is working on a project that will beam a song and music video into the cosmos.
G-Dragon has teamed up with Sora, an artificial intelligence program developed by OpenAI, to create the song and video. OpenAI is the same company behind ChatGPT.
Following his departure from YG Entertainment, G-Dragon joined Galaxy Corporation, a metaverse-focused agency. He described this project as a significant step in the emerging “entertech” field, which blends AI, entertainment, and space physics.
The project is part of NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program. SETI previously sent the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe” into space in 2008, marking the first time NASA transmitted music beyond Earth.
G-Dragon will also speak about the potential of AI in entertainment at Innovate Korea, a leading science and technology seminar, on April 9, 2025, at KAIST.
In May 2024, Galaxy Corporation and KAIST signed an agreement to explore the use of AI in K-pop. G-Dragon was appointed as a visiting professor at KAIST the same year.
Earlier this year, G-Dragon released his first album in over a decade, Übermensch, and launched his Übermensch World Tour. He began the tour in Goyang, South Korea, on March 29, and will perform next in Tokyo on May 10.
