Distinguishing her solo music from Chvrches material is something Lauren Mayberry is keen to do.
The 36-year-old singer announced her first solo tour and music earlier this year, revealing she didn’t want to simply imitate her ‘Miracle’ records with the synth-pop group.
Lauren told NME how she isolated her solo work: “It was easy because it was born out of things I couldn’t or wouldn’t write in the band.
“The worst writing sessions were when I’d go in with somebody who didn’t really understand what I was talking about and we’d just write a s*** Chvrches song.
“I was like, ‘This is a nice afternoon, but what’s the point? There’s already a universe where I can do that and I enjoy it. I don’t see why I would want to do the Tesco branded version of it. These are musical and lyrical things that I don’t get to do in the band or don’t feel comfortable doing in the band.
Lauren – who sings in Chvrches with Iain Cook and Martin Doherty – admits she was very apprehensive about going it alone.
She explained: “There is always nervousness. For any front person in a band, but especially a woman, as soon as you say the words ‘solo material’ people get very upset with you. I feel like every other sentence is ‘I’m not breaking up the band, guys, but…’.
“But we’re lucky enough to have fans that care so much that they don’t want it to break up. I feel grateful, but I try to reassure them – ‘Just give us a few more years guys, it’s gonna be fine.
