Victoria’s prestigious Summer Music Festival returns for its 29th year with an enticing lineup that blends classical masterpieces with contemporary compositions, featuring a mix of local talents and renowned international artists.
Scheduled from July 30 to August 12 at the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall, University of Victoria, the festival promises to captivate seasoned aficionados and newcomers alike.
Kevin Farris, a board member of the Victoria Summer Music Festival Society, expressed enthusiasm about the festival’s evolution. “It’s truly exhilarating to witness how our festival has grown, uniting the community and artists in a celebration of music each summer,” he remarked. This year’s program boasts performances by esteemed ensembles such as the Dover Quartet and the New Zealand String Quartet, each presenting two unique programs.
Artistic Director Arthur Rowe, himself a performer in this year’s lineup, has curated a diverse selection of musicians. “We’re introducing pre-concert talks hosted by Ian Alexander, starting 15 minutes before each performance,” Rowe noted. These talks provide concert-goers with the opportunity to engage with the artists and gain insights into the music featured in the concerts.
The festival continues to serve as a cultural hub, fostering a deep appreciation for classical and modern music forms among its audience while showcasing the talent and dedication of musicians from around the globe.
