Rod Argent, the founder, keyboardist, and primary songwriter of The Zombies, has suffered a stroke shortly after returning from a triumphant UK tour. Argent, who had been celebrating his 79th birthday and 52nd wedding anniversary with his wife Cathy in London, was hospitalized overnight and released the following day. Doctors have advised that he will need several months of rest and recuperation.
Argent has decided to retire from touring to protect his health. Although he was already planning to wind down his live performances after recent health scares, with a final US tour in the works for Fall 2024, the stroke has made it clear that the risks are too great. Despite his retirement from touring, Argent intends to continue writing and recording with The Zombies and has already returned to his piano for some much-needed “Bach therapy.”
Argent previously retired from touring in 1975 to focus on his family, songwriting, and production. He returned to the stage in 1999 after Colin Blunstone persuaded him to fill in for six solo gigs, which unexpectedly led to 25 years of touring and recording with The Zombies.
The Zombies have had a remarkable run, including their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and performances at prestigious festivals and venues worldwide. However, all upcoming performances by The Zombies will be canceled. The 2nd annual “Begin Here Festival” in St Albans, UK, scheduled for November 8-10, 2024, will continue, though plans for a special show honoring Rod are in the works. Colin Blunstone’s performances of his 1971 solo album “One Year” will also proceed as planned.
Fans can look forward to “The True Story of the Fake Zombies,” an 8-episode true-crime podcast on iHeart Radio, and the official Zombies documentary “Hung Up On A Dream,” directed by Robert Schwartzman, set for release later this year.
As we reflect on Rod’s career, we remind fans not to miss the opportunity to see classic artists live. The communal experience of a live performance by a veteran artist is irreplaceable. These artists, like Rod, have given their all and are cherished treasures. Don’t miss out on the chance to witness their magic.
