After an eleven-year hiatus, Grammy-winning rapper, actor, and author LL COOL J is set to release his highly anticipated album, “The FORCE,” in September, marking a pivotal moment in his four-decade hip-hop career.
During a Zoom interview with The Associated Press, LL COOL J revealed his journey back into music-making after sporadic studio sessions over the years. It wasn’t until recent years that inspiration struck profoundly. Faced with a creative block, an impactful dream featuring the late Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest spurred LL to seek collaboration with Q-Tip, also from A Tribe Called Quest, who produced every track on the album.
Describing the process as a return to basics, LL COOL J emphasized, “I had to learn how to rap again… ensuring my lyrics were genuinely inspired. That’s why there’s no filler on this album.”
“The FORCE,” acronymizing “frequencies of real creative energy,” according to LL COOL J, explores diverse themes reflective of his extensive career. From motivational tracks like “Passion” to collaborations with Eminem on “Murdergram Deux” and Saweetie on “Proclivities,” the album merges LL’s seasoned wisdom with contemporary rap vigor.
Notable tracks include “Huey in the Chair,” a homage to Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton, and “Basquiat Energy,” celebrating the innovative spirit of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. LL COOL J aims to resonate with listeners by expressing personal truths, echoing the artistic integrity of his icons.
In commemorating hip-hop’s 50th anniversary last year, LL COOL J sought to challenge norms, proving that artists with enduring careers can innovate within the genre. Collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Nas, Busta Rhymes, and others underscore his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries while staying true to his roots.
“I wanted to meet people where I’m at now,” LL COOL J emphasized, highlighting his artistic evolution without preaching. “This album reflects my current artistic journey, and I hope listeners find their own inspiration in it.”
“The FORCE” is slated to release on September 6, promising a blend of seasoned lyricism and modern beats that resonate at a high creative frequency. For more updates and details on the album, visit LL COOL J’s official channels and music platforms.
