The Newport Classical Music Festival is set to enchant audiences with a unique fusion of classical music and cinematic charm this summer.
Titled “Classical Movie Music,” the festival promises a magical experience where the artistry of John Williams’ evocative scores, including the haunting melodies of Schindler’s List and the whimsical themes from E.T., will blend seamlessly with the adventurous spirit of Indiana Jones and the fantastical worlds of Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King, and Lord of the Rings. Hosted at the historic Blithewold Mansion, these performances by Newport Classical’s Festival Artists offer a perfect outing for both classical music aficionados and film enthusiasts alike.
Against the backdrop of Newport’s picturesque landscapes, known as the City-by-the-Sea, the festival spans 18 days from July 4-21, featuring 27 concerts across 11 esteemed venues. This year marks the festival’s 55th anniversary, celebrating over five decades of artistic excellence that continues to attract patrons seeking exceptional performances in intimate settings.
Highlights of the festival include the grand Opening Night featuring the Sphinx Virtuosi and cellist Thomas Mesa, a captivating recital by renowned violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, and the return of acclaimed groups like Chanticleer and Canadian Brass with special guests Kinan Azmeh and Dinuk Wijeratne. Notable debuts include the Handel and Haydn Society, along with performances by Broadway star Laura Benanti and esteemed pianists Lara Downes, Joyce Yang, Llewellyn Sánchez-Werner, Drew Petersen, and Daniel del Pino.
Additionally, the festival boasts appearances by celebrated chamber ensembles such as the Isidore String Quartet, PUBLIQuartet, Duo Kayo, Lincoln Trio, Fenway Quintet, Poulenc Trio featuring accordionist Hanzhi Wang, and Sō Percussion with vocalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw.
