In celebration of Thurston Moore’s birthday, The Daydream Library Series record label has debuted his latest single, “New In Town,” in anticipation of his forthcoming album Flow Critical Lucidity. The album is slated for release on September 20, with an album launch party scheduled for September 22 at Rough Trade East in London, where Moore will also perform and sign copies of the album. Additional appearances include the Miami Book Fair and a special week of improvisation at The Stone in New York City.

“New In Town” is an experimental track that blends prepared guitar, piano, and electronics, accompanied by lyrics from Radieux Radio. The song pays homage to the 1980s D.C. punk and hardcore scene, drawing inspiration from bands like Minor Threat, Fugazi, Bad Brains, and Red C.

Moore describes the song as a commentary on “fresh blood” and the potential for change within established communities. He elaborates, “The song reflects the spirit of youth seen in the early ’80s hardcore scene, challenging the stagnant expectations of adulthood and confronting the dangers posed by power-hungry figures.”

The album’s title, Flow Critical Lucidity, is derived from a lyric in the previously released single “Sans Limites,” which features vocals by Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab. The album cover art, created by British artist Jamie Nares, showcases ‘Samurai Walkman,’ a helmet adorned with tuning forks. Nares, a long-time collaborator of Moore from the New York No Wave era, has contributed both art and music to the project.

Fans of Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore will have access to all album tracks on streaming platforms, with a selection of bonus songs available exclusively on physical formats including vinyl, compact disc, and cassette. Past singles from the album include the introspective “Hypnogram” and the Earth Day anthem “Rewilding.” The LP edition also features a bonus track, “Isadora,” accompanied by a music video starring Sky Ferreira.

In a recent surprise at his May 10 show at OTO in North London, Moore was joined by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones for two sets of improvisational music, creating an electrifying experience for attendees. Moore has also confirmed a series of live appearances for 2024, including readings of his memoir Sonic Life and performances with his band, which includes Alex Ward on guitars and clarinet, Deb Googe on bass, Jon Leidecker (aka ‘Wobbly’) on electronics, and Jem Doulton on drums.
