Charli XCX has been nominated for the 2024 Mercury Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in British music. The 31-year-old pop sensation’s latest album, Brat, is among the 12 albums shortlisted for this year’s prize.

Released on June 7, Brat is Charli’s sixth studio album and has gained significant traction on social media, particularly through a viral TikTok dance to her track “Apple.” The album’s viral success has led to the emergence of the phrase “brat summer.”

Other nominees include:

Cat Burns for Early Twenties

Nia Archives for Silence Is Loud

Barry Can’t Swim for When Will We Land?

The Last Dinner Party for Prelude To Ecstasy

corto.alto for Bad With Names

English Teacher for This Could Be Texas

All of these are debut albums.

Irish musician CMAT is nominated for her second album, Crazymad, for Me, while rapper Ghetts and singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae have been recognized for their fourth albums, On Purpose, With Purpose and Black Rainbows, respectively.

Beth Gibbons is also in the running with her album Lives Outgrown, marking a notable return 29 years after winning the Mercury Prize with Portishead in 1995.

Rapper Berwyn makes the shortlist for the second time with his debut full-length album, Who I Am.

The Mercury Prize, which celebrates the best music by British and Irish artists, will announce this year’s winner in September. Previous winners include Arlo Parks, Dave, Wolf Alice, and last year’s recipient, the jazz quintet Ezra Collective.
