London Trans+ Pride (LT+P) made history on Saturday, July 27th, as it became the largest trans pride event ever recorded, with an estimated 55,000-60,000 attendees marching through central London in solidarity with the trans+ community.
The event featured powerful speeches from influential figures such as Yasmin Finney from Heartstopper, Olivia Campbell-Cavendish, founder of Trans Legal Clinic, and Sarah Jane Baker, founder of Trans Prisoner Alliance, among others.
Reflecting on the significance of LT+P 2024, founding member Lewis G. Burton expressed profound gratitude: “London Trans+ Pride 2024 was the biggest one to date! This show of solidarity with the trans+ community yesterday was so powerful and poignant – in a time when we need the public’s show of support now more than ever.”
Burton continued, highlighting the impact of the event amidst challenges faced by the trans+ community: “Often at times due to vitriol and bigotry inflated by the UK media that our community faces we often feel like we live in a country where we are not loved and respected. Yesterday was a beautiful reminder to not only the glorious trans+ community but to London, the new Labour government and the rest of the world that trans+ people are loved and this love is a huge majority.”
LT+P, known for its peaceful march celebrating trans+ lives and advocating for rights, also stood in solidarity with global movements for justice, including Palestine, Sudan, Haiti, and Congo.
Prior to LT+P, a Press Brunch held at The Mandrake Hotel gathered notable supporters including Bimini, Romy, Ella Morgan, and various figures from the entertainment and advocacy spheres. The event underscored the importance of allyship and support for the trans+ community in challenging times.
“This year’s theme responds to ongoing injustices worldwide,” Burton emphasized, noting the intersectionality of trans+ rights with racial, climate, and disability justice movements. “London Trans+ Pride’s record-breaking attendance this year is the beautiful support the community needed amidst attempts to undermine our human rights,” he concluded.
LT+P 2024 marked a pivotal moment in its history, reaffirming the resilience and unity of the trans+ community in the face of adversity, while demanding justice and recognition on a global scale.
