Country music star Cody Hibbard has candidly shared his struggle with prescription pill addiction. Hibbard, known for his rebellious nature, described how his tendency to defy conventional advice nearly derailed his life. Initially inspired to join the Marines, Hibbard eventually accepted an offer to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. However, a shoulder injury and subsequent surgeries led to a dependency on pain medication.
“I got on pain medication from the first surgery, and I got easily hooked,” Hibbard admitted. “I wanted more and needed more, and I didn’t think something a doctor would give you would be something that bad.”
After leaving the Naval Academy to pursue another educational path, Hibbard’s addiction followed him. He recounted a pivotal moment of clarity: “I remember waking up in the hospital. My friends had just dropped me off at the front steps of the emergency room. They must have gotten scared and drove off. I knew I had a problem.”
Amidst his battle with addiction, Hibbard turned to music as a source of solace. He released his debut EP, Memory and a Dirt Road, in January 2020, followed by his self-titled EP, Cody Hibbard. His latest project, Long Ride in a Short Bed, is a deeply personal album where he reflects on his struggles with addiction and the loss of his faith.
