Billy Strings, acclaimed as one of the greatest live performers across genres and eras, is set to push the boundaries of bluegrass with his upcoming album, Highway Prayers. The album, slated for release on September 27 via Reprise Records, marks a departure from his traditional bluegrass roots, blending his signature improvisation with innovative experimentation.
Strings, who recently released his first live album, Live Vol. 1, on July 12, emphasizes that his music thrives in live settings. Despite not aiming for massive studio album sales, Strings continues to explore new musical frontiers. His forthcoming album features 20 original tracks co-produced with Jon Brion.
Highway Prayers will showcase Strings’ touring band—Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Masat (bass), Jarrod Walker (mandolin), and Alex Hargraves (fiddle)—alongside a range of guest artists including Jerry Douglas (dobro), Jason Carter (fiddle), and Lindsay Lou (backing vocals).
The album’s lead single, “Leadfoot,” highlights Strings’ versatility as he plays banjo, bass, steel guitar, and EBow electric guitar, with Matt Chamberlain on drums and unique sounds from a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle.
While Highway Prayers promises to explore progressive elements, it will also feature traditional bluegrass, reflecting the dynamic range of Strings’ music. Fans will recognize tracks like “Richard Petty” and “Catch and Release” from Live Vol. 1 and his live performances.
Billy Strings is renowned for his improvisational prowess and contributions to bluegrass standards. Whether “Leadfoot” or another track from Highway Prayers becomes a future classic, the album’s studio beginnings will set the stage for the dynamic live performances Strings is celebrated for.
