The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have been rescheduled to accommodate a presidential election debate. Originally slated for Tuesday, September 10, the high-profile ceremony will now take place on Wednesday, September 11.
The change comes to prevent a scheduling conflict with a televised debate between 2024 US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. MTV announced the rescheduling in a press release on Monday, encouraging fans to tune in to the debate on September 10, “ahead of music’s most iconic night.”
MTV has long advocated for increased voter participation among young people, and the network’s decision to avoid a clash with the debate aims to prevent accusations of hypocrisy. The debate is expected to be a significant event, marking the first direct confrontation between Trump and Harris as they seek support for the upcoming presidential election.
The rescheduling follows a period of political uncertainty, including President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race after struggling with his public speaking. Kamala Harris has since been confirmed as the Democratic nominee for 2024.
On Monday, MTV also announced the first set of performers for the 2024 VMAs. Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro are all scheduled to perform at the event.
Leading the nominations is Taylor Swift, who has received 10 nods, including for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Pop.
