Tony Brown, a legendary figure in country music and former sideman for Elvis Presley, is set to be honored with the ACM Icon Award at the Academy of Country Music Honors on August 21. The ceremony, held at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, will celebrate Brown’s profound influence on the country music industry over the past four decades.
Brown’s illustrious career began with his work as a pianist for musical greats like Elvis Presley, the Oak Ridge Boys, and Emmylou Harris. He later transitioned to the MCA A&R department in the 1980s, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of artists such as Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, and Nanci Griffith. As a producer, Brown’s work with Vince Gill, Wynonna Judd, Reba McEntire, and George Strait left an indelible mark on the sound of modern country music.
Reflecting on the honor, Brown expressed his excitement, saying, “Receiving this award gives me credibility in my mind that I’m not just an old-timer. I am totally pumped that this [award] popped up right now. It’s a big deal.”
