The Schools of Media Arts and Music at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) are proud to present Open Country, a compelling new documentary that reclaims country music as a genre rooted in the working class. The film, a decade-long labor of love by California filmmakers Jesse Drew and Glenda Drew, will be screened on Friday, September 6, at 7 p.m. in Browne Auditorium, Parkinson Hall, Room 124.
Open Country takes viewers on a cinematic journey into the authentic origins of country music, offering a spirited alternative to the commercialized version of the genre. This film, described as both revealing and full of spunk, seeks to reconnect audiences with the soulful and gritty roots of country music that speak to everyday people’s experiences.
The evening will kick off with a live performance by Southern Illinois’ own Hugh DeNeal, renowned singer-songwriter and member of the Woodbox Gang and The People vs. Hugh DeNeal. His music, known for its raw and authentic style, perfectly complements the themes explored in Open Country.
