In a recent Instagram post, Britney Spears shared her candid thoughts on Sabrina Carpenter’s tribute during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), revealing her mixed feelings about the performance.

Carpenter, 25, delivered a medley of her hits that prominently featured a spoken interlude from Spears’ classic track, “Oops!…I Did It Again.” However, Spears expressed confusion over a specific moment in the performance where Carpenter kissed a blue alien.

“Why is she kissing an alien onstage?” Spears questioned. “I adore her. I love her to death, but I didn’t understand that part. Why not kiss a girl?” This remark seemed to allude to Spears’ iconic 2003 VMAs kiss with Madonna. “That was weird. Overall, I thought the whole performance was a bit odd,” she added.

Spears, 42, reflected on the experience, noting that after viewing the performance, she took a long bath and engaged in some coloring. “This Sabrina girl mentioned my name on the red carpet, which I thought was pretty cool because sometimes I forget I’m famous,” she said. “Being a mom and all, I feel a bit out of the loop, so it was nice. She made me feel cool!”

Carpenter was not the only performer to reference Spears during the event. Host Megan Thee Stallion also paid homage by recreating Spears’ iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” outfit from the 2001 VMAs, complete with the large python draped around her neck.

“Stop the music, stop the music!” Megan exclaimed as the snake wrapped around her shoulders. “I’m just playin’! Come get this snake! I don’t know this snake, and this snake doesn’t know me. Oh my God. I tried to hold it down for Britney.”
