The Cure appear to have hinted at the release date of their first album in 16 years through a unique promotional strategy involving postcards. Fans of the iconic post-punk band received black postcards featuring scattered letters from the album’s title, Songs Of A Lost World, along with a date in Roman numerals—November 1—suggesting that new music from the group could be less than two months away.

In conjunction with the postcard campaign, The Cure updated their social media profiles with a new logo and directed fans to their official website to join their mailing list.

In a 2022 interview with NME, Robert Smith, 65, revealed that the band was working on two distinct albums. One of these is Songs Of A Lost World, while Smith is also preparing a solo record. At the time, Smith stated: “So I’ve been working on two Cure albums, and one of them is finished. Unfortunately, it’s the second one that’s finished. [On the other] I’ve got to do four vocals, and there are 10 songs on each album. We’re mixing next month on April 1, so I’ve got three weeks left.”

Smith also mentioned that Songs Of A Lost World was nearly complete, with artwork and a track listing finalized. “They’re so slow because of vinyl, but it might come in September. I’d rather it just came out. I can’t stand the anticipation,” he added.

Regarding the sound of the forthcoming albums, Smith noted: “The first Cure album is relentless doom and gloom. It’s the doomiest thing that we’ve ever done. The second one is upbeat, and my [solo] one won’t be out until next year.”

Songs Of A Lost World will serve as the long-awaited follow-up to The Cure’s 2008 release, 4:13 Dream.
