Mary Garnett Edwards, the North Vancouver-based country artist, has released a haunting new single, “Golden Eyed Boy,” from her forthcoming album Madhouse. The track, inspired by noir themes, delivers a powerful blend of lyrical depth and musical intensity, showcasing Edwards’ skill in crafting a compelling narrative.

“‘Golden Eyed Boy’ combines elements of fiction with personal experiences, creating a story that is both tragic and evocative,” Edwards explains. “Writing this song was like crafting a short novel. I envisioned various characters and scenarios, which then influenced the lyrics.”

At 67, Edwards brings a raw, emotive quality to the song, her voice reminiscent of a country-fied Kim Carnes. The single, which delves into themes of prostitution and the darker aspects of life, is brought to life by the collaborative efforts of a talented group of musicians. Producer Andreas Schuld’s intricate guitar work, especially in the bridge, enhances the track’s moody atmosphere.

The song also features contributions from drummer Pat Steward, bassist Norm Fisher, keyboardist Darryl Havers, dobro player Chas Williams, and backing vocalist Gord Maxwell. These musicians, known for their work with artists like Bryan Adams and Nanci Griffith, help transform the roots-based murder ballad into a chilling and memorable piece.
