Danielia Cotton has launched a heartfelt tribute to the trailblazing Charley Pride with her new album, Charley’s Pride: A Tribute to Black Country Music. The release comes as Pride’s influence continues to resonate, particularly after his posthumous recognition in the Goldmine In Memoriam series following his death in December 2020.
Charley Pride, who was celebrated for his groundbreaking achievements in country music, had received the CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th Annual Country Music Association Awards, just a month before his passing. Known for his impressive legacy, Pride had 29 No. 1 country hits from the 1960s through the 1980s, setting a precedent for Black artists in the genre.
Danielia Cotton’s tribute comes amid a remarkable year for Black artists in country music, highlighted by Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter topping the charts in the U.S. and internationally. Cotton, who is typically known for her rock music, explores the country genre in her new project. She recounts discovering a Charley Pride album hidden under her grandparents’ bed, an experience that deepened her appreciation for Pride’s impact.
Cotton’s album not only celebrates Pride’s legacy but also reflects the broader recognition of Black contributions to country music.
