Mildmay musician Owen Riegling is basking in the glow of recognition from the Canadian country music community. At the recent Canadian Country Music Awards, Riegling received his first official award, taking home the titles of “Songwriter of the Year” and “Breakthrough Artist of the Year.”
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Riegling shared the backstory of his award-winning song, “Old Dirt Roads.” Written in 2019 while he was in his college apartment, Riegling described the song as a personal reflection on his upbringing rather than a radio-friendly hit. He admitted he never anticipated it would garner such acclaim or reach a wide audience.
“I was writing a song about the place I was raised, the people I grew up with, and the things that keep me connected to home, even when I’m far away,” Riegling said.
Despite his success, Riegling remains humble, acknowledging his roots and expressing amazement at his journey. His advice to aspiring musicians: “Be you, write what you know, and enjoy every minute of it.”
Riegling has also announced his first cross-Canada tour, set to begin in November, marking another milestone in his burgeoning career.
