On Tuesday, a diverse array of stars from stage, screen, and sports gathered to honor former President Jimmy Carter ahead of his 100th birthday. The tribute event, held at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, was designed to underscore Carter’s dedication to human rights and his belief in music as a universal language.

Jason Carter, the former president’s grandson, addressed the more than 4,000 attendees, declaring, “Everyone here is making history. This is the first time people have come together to celebrate the 100th birthday of an American president.”

The benefit concert, which will air in full on Georgia Public Broadcasting on October 1—Carter’s birthday—was organized to support international programs of The Carter Center, which Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter established in 1982 after leaving the White House. The eclectic lineup of artists, spanning various generations and genres, reflected the broad impact of Carter’s 1976 campaign and presidency.

Chuck Leavell, a member of the Allman Brothers Band who supported Carter’s 1976 campaign, described him as “the rock-and-roll president.” Leavell highlighted Carter’s appreciation for music as a unifying force, stating, “He always understood music as something that brings people together.”

Tuesday’s event featured a wide range of performances: India Arie delivered an R&B and soul performance in a stunning purple gown, the B-52s, hailing from Athens, Georgia, energized the audience with their hit “Love Shack” and vibrant psychedelic visuals, and the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus provided a classical and patriotic repertoire.

The celebration not only honored Carter’s milestone but also celebrated his legacy and enduring influence through music and humanitarian efforts.
